BEREANS: In ancient times, the Bereans were the inhabitants of the city of Berea, also known in the Bible as Beroea, now known a Veria in what is today Greek Macedonia, northern Greece.  The name has been taken up by certain Protestant groups. The Bereans were scrutinizing, investigating, interrogating, examining, judging, and criticizing the Scriptures to see where, when, and how they said the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead.  And, the Bereans were doing this with the intention of reversing what they had previously believed the Scriptures said. Acts 17:10,11 says, “The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.  Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.”
